How to read this page

The positions shown are sidereal, calculated with the Lahiri ayanamsa — the standard used across Indian panchang. They update daily from live ephemeris data rather than from a fixed table, so the sign and degree shown are the current ones, not an approximation.

Surya owns one sign, and its moolatrikona is that same sign

The Sun rules Leo and nothing else. Six of the seven classical grahas hold two signs each; the Sun and the Moon hold one apiece, which is why a Sun period never splits its attention between two departments of a chart the way a Mars or a Mercury period does.

Its moolatrikona is Leo too — the Sun is one of the grahas whose root-trine sits inside the sign it already owns, so ownership and root-trine reinforce rather than pull apart. Its exaltation is elsewhere: 10° of Aries, with the fall at the same 10° of Libra.

Six years of the 120-year Vimshottari cycle belong to the Sun — the shortest mahadasha of the nine. A Sun period is the one that is over before most people have decided what it was about.

Krittika, Uttara Phalguni and Uttara Ashadha answer to the Sun

Three of the twenty-seven nakshatras carry the Sun as their Vimshottari lord: Krittika, Uttara Phalguni and Uttara Ashadha. Two of the three are "Uttara" — the later half of a paired nakshatra — which is why the Sun’s dasha so often opens for people born just after a lunar boundary rather than at the start of one.

A Moon in any of those three at birth starts the whole dasha sequence under the Sun, no matter which sign the Moon occupies. Sign and clock are set by two different measurements of the same Moon.

The Sun helps five ascendants and works against six

From Aries, Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Sagittarius rising the engine grades the Sun a functional benefic. From Gemini, Virgo, Libra, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces it grades it a functional malefic. Cancer is the single ascendant where it comes out neutral, because from there the Sun owns only the 2nd — a house classical rule treats as neither good nor bad in itself.

The Sun is never a yogakaraka for anyone. Owning one sign, it can never hold both an angle and a trine at once, so the role is closed to it by arithmetic rather than by temperament.

Everything above is structural — it is true of the sign or the graha itself, for everybody, and it stays true next year. A chart turns that structure into an answer only once a date, a time and a place fix the ascendant and the dasha clock; where the birth time is unknown or approximate, the ascendant is unreliable and we say so rather than guessing.
