Rahu — the north lunar node

Rahu is not a physical body. It is the north point where the Moon's orbit crosses the ecliptic, which is why it has no light of its own and always moves retrograde through the zodiac, completing one circuit in roughly 18 months per sign and about 18 years overall.

In prediction Rahu marks amplification and hunger — the area of life you over-reach into. It gives quickly and without the usual earning, then asks for the bill. A Rahu period in the 10th house often produces a sudden career jump; the same period can produce the exposure that follows it.

Rahu is always exactly 180° from Ketu, so the two are read as a single axis. Whatever Rahu inflates, Ketu on the opposite house quietly empties.

The positions shown are sidereal, calculated with the Lahiri ayanamsa — the standard used across Indian panchang. They update daily from live ephemeris data rather than from a fixed table, so the sign and degree shown are the current ones, not an approximation.

Rahu owns no sign, and this engine grades it no exaltation

Rahu is a point rather than a body — the ascending place where the Moon’s orbit crosses the ecliptic. There is no sign it owns, so there is no "own sign" strength to fall back on when it is badly placed, and no moolatrikona either.

Exaltation is the one place classical sources genuinely disagree about the nodes: different schools put Rahu in different signs and some assign none at all. This engine’s exaltation table holds seven entries and neither node is among them, so no exaltation is claimed here. That is a deliberate omission — a confident wrong dignity would propagate into every strength score downstream of it.

Eighteen years of the Vimshottari cycle are Rahu’s, and it takes roughly five hundred and forty-eight days to a sign, moving backwards the whole time.

Ardra, Swati and Shatabhisha answer to Rahu

Rahu rules Ardra, Swati and Shatabhisha. None of the three is a "paired" nakshatra and none shares a lord with a neighbour, which suits a graha the tradition reads as unassimilated — the three sit apart in the sequence the way the node sits apart from the seven.

A Moon in any of them opens the dasha sequence with an eighteen-year Rahu mahadasha, the third longest of the nine, which front-loads a birth with the period most people describe afterwards as the one that rearranged everything.

Why Rahu is left ungraded for every ascendant

The engine grades the seven classical grahas for each of the twelve ascendants and leaves both nodes neutral in all twelve. That is a decision rather than a gap: functional grading is derived from the houses a planet owns, and a node owns nothing, so there is no lordship to grade it by.

The practical consequence is that a Rahu gemstone is never auto-prescribed here. Where a node genuinely dominates a chart the engine reaches for mantra and donation instead, which do not amplify the way a stone does.

What this page can and cannot tell you

What this page cannot do: it has no birth time, so it cannot place a single graha in a single house of a real chart, and nothing here is a reading. Everything above is structural — it is true of the sign or the graha itself, for everybody, and it stays true next year. A chart turns that structure into an answer only once a date, a time and a place fix the ascendant and the dasha clock; where the birth time is unknown or approximate, the ascendant is unreliable and we say so rather than guessing.
