Gochar — planetary transit

Gochar is the movement of planets through the signs right now, read against the position they held at your birth. A transit only matters relative to a natal chart: Saturn entering Pisces is one event, but it lands on a different house — and therefore a different area of life — for every person.

Transit speed determines the size of the effect. The Moon changes sign every 2.25 days and colours a mood; Saturn takes about 2.5 years per sign and restructures a life area. Jupiter takes roughly one year per sign, Rahu and Ketu about 18 months.

Vedic practice reads transits from the Moon sign (Chandra lagna) first, then cross-checks against the ascendant. That is why two people with the same Sun sign can experience the same transit completely differently.

How to read this page

The positions shown are sidereal, calculated with the Lahiri ayanamsa — the standard used across Indian panchang. They update daily from live ephemeris data rather than from a fixed table, so the sign and degree shown are the current ones, not an approximation.

The slow movers, and when each next changes sign

A transit is worth watching in proportion to how long it lasts, which leaves four grahas doing most of the work: Jupiter at roughly a year to a sign, the two nodes at about eighteen months, and Saturn at about two and a half years. Everything faster than that changes the weather rather than the season.

Dates below are given as MONTHS, deliberately. The series this page computes from is a truncated one, accurate to a fraction of a degree, and for a graha moving one degree a fortnight that uncertainty is measured in weeks. A day-precise ingress printed here would be a confident wrong number; the arc-second moment belongs to the full ephemeris engine.

The nodes move backwards, so their ingress row names the sign BEHIND the one they currently occupy. That is not a typo — Rahu and Ketu are permanently retrograde, and they always sit exactly opposite each other.

What this page can and cannot tell you

What this page cannot do: it has no birth time, so it cannot place a single graha in a single house of a real chart, and nothing here is a reading. Everything above is structural — it is true of the sign or the graha itself, for everybody, and it stays true next year. A chart turns that structure into an answer only once a date, a time and a place fix the ascendant and the dasha clock; where the birth time is unknown or approximate, the ascendant is unreliable and we say so rather than guessing.

Gochar is read from the natal Moon in Vedic practice, and second from the ascendant. Both are chart facts. The same Saturn ingress above is a 3rd-house transit for one reader and an 8th-house transit for another, and those are not variations on a theme — they are different predictions.
