There is the person you are, and there is the person the world thinks you are. Jaimini Jyotish gives the second one its own point in the chart: the Arudha Lagna. It is not a mood or a metaphor — it is a specific sign, arrived at by a counting rule anyone can check, and it is where reputation, visible status, and the impression you leave actually live. Two people can share a Lagna and have completely different Arudhas, which is why one is quietly influential and the other is loudly ordinary.

The rule is deliberately simple. Find your Lagna and the planet that rules it. Count how many signs it is from the Lagna to that planet. Then count the same number again, starting from the planet. Where you land is the Arudha Lagna. Two classical exceptions apply, and they exist because an image cannot sit on top of the thing it is an image of: if the result falls on the Lagna itself or on the 7th from it, you move to the 10th sign from that result instead. We compute all of this from Swiss Ephemeris positions on the Lahiri ayanamsa, so the sign is arithmetic, not interpretation.

What makes the Arudha genuinely useful is the GAP between it and your Lagna. When the two are close together, what people see is roughly what you are — a life with little performance in it. When they sit far apart, you carry a public self that does not match the private one, and the chart is telling you something true about the cost and the leverage of that distance. We read the gap first, then the Arudha sign, then the padas of the other houses. Anything less and you are just being handed another sign name.

Arudha in the 1st (same as Lagna)

By rule this cannot happen — the exception sends it to the 10th instead. If a calculator ever hands you this, it has skipped the classical exception.

Arudha in the 2nd or 12th from Lagna

Image sits right beside identity. People read you roughly correctly; there is little theatre in your public life. The trade-off is that you get little cover — misjudgements land on you personally.

1. Case 1 — Lagna Taurus, ruled by Venus, and Venus sits in Leo. Count from Taurus to Leo: Taurus 1, Gemini 2, Cancer 3, Leo 4. That is 4 signs. Now count 4 again from Leo: Leo 1, Virgo 2, Libra 3, Scorpio 4. Arudha Lagna = Scorpio.
2. Case 2 (the first exception) — Lagna Aries, ruled by Mars, and Mars sits in Aries itself. Count from Aries to Aries: 1. Count 1 again from Aries: Aries. The result lands ON the Lagna, which the rule forbids, so take the 10th sign from Aries instead: Aries 1, Taurus 2, Gemini 3, Cancer 4, Leo 5, Virgo 6, Libra 7, Scorpio 8, Sagittarius 9, Capricorn 10. Arudha Lagna = Capricorn.
3. Case 3 (the second exception) — Lagna Gemini, ruled by Mercury, and Mercury sits in Sagittarius. Count from Gemini to Sagittarius: 7. Count 7 again from Sagittarius: Sagittarius 1, Capricorn 2, Aquarius 3, Pisces 4, Aries 5, Taurus 6, Gemini 7. The result is Gemini — the Lagna again — so move to the 10th from Gemini: Pisces. Arudha Lagna = Pisces.
4. The same two-step count derives the arudha pada of every other house: count from the house to its lord, then the same number onward from the lord, applying the identical exception.

What this tool can NOT tell you

• The Arudha describes how you are PERCEIVED, not who you are. A difficult Arudha with a strong Lagna is a good person who is read badly — that is a communication problem, not a character verdict, and treating it as the latter is the commonest misuse of this technique.
