Most marriage reading in Jyotish starts at the 7th house. Jaimini adds a second door, and for questions about the SHAPE of a long partnership it is often the more revealing one: the Upapada Lagna. Upapada is the arudha — the image, the projected form — of the 12th house. That sounds strange until you know why the 12th is used: in classical reckoning the 12th house governs what you give away and give up, and marriage in the traditional frame is precisely the house of loss for the self and gain for the union. The image of that giving is what the Upapada names.

The derivation is the same two-step count used for every arudha. Locate the 12th house from your Lagna, find its ruling planet, count the signs from the 12th house to that planet, then count the same number again starting from the planet. Where you land is the Upapada Lagna (UL), abbreviated UL or sometimes A12. The classical exception applies: if the result falls on the 12th house itself or the 6th from it, move to the 10th sign from that result. Swiss Ephemeris positions on the Lahiri ayanamsa make the underlying placements exact.

Then comes the part most calculators skip. In Jaimini practice the UL is read together with the 2nd house FROM the Upapada, which is treated as the sustenance of the marriage — whether the bond is fed or starved over time. A benefic there strengthens the marriage; a malefic there is the classical caution flag, and the tradition is explicit that this is a flag to work with, not a sentence. We show both, because showing the UL alone gives you half a technique.

Jupiter in or aspecting the 2nd from UL

The single most protective placement in this technique. Classically read as a marriage that is nourished — by wisdom, by family support, or simply by the partner's generosity of spirit.

Venus there

Affection and material comfort sustain the bond. Pleasant and stabilising; the caution is a partnership that coasts on ease and stops doing the harder work.

Mercury or Moon there

Deriving the Upapada — worked twice, including the exception

1. Case 1 — Lagna Aries. The 12th house from Aries is Pisces, ruled by Jupiter. Suppose Jupiter sits in Cancer. Count from Pisces to Cancer: Pisces 1, Aries 2, Taurus 3, Gemini 4, Cancer 5. That is 5 signs. Now count 5 again from Cancer: Cancer 1, Leo 2, Virgo 3, Libra 4, Scorpio 5. Upapada Lagna = Scorpio.
2. Now take the next step most tools omit: the 2nd sign from Scorpio is Sagittarius. Whatever occupies or aspects Sagittarius is read as the sustenance of this marriage — Jupiter there would be the classical protection, Saturn there the classical caution.
3. Case 2 (the exception) — Lagna Leo. The 12th from Leo is Cancer, ruled by the Moon, and suppose the Moon sits in Cancer itself. Count from Cancer to Cancer: 1. Count 1 again: Cancer. The result lands on the 12th house itself, which the rule forbids, so take the 10th sign from Cancer: Cancer 1, Leo 2, Virgo 3, Libra 4, Scorpio 5, Sagittarius 6, Capricorn 7, Aquarius 8, Pisces 9, Aries 10. Upapada Lagna = Aries.
4. Both derivations are pure counting. If you know your Lagna and where the 12th lord sits, you can reproduce them by hand.

The Upapada is one count and one exception — and then one further step to the 2nd house from it. Skipping that last step is why two readings of the same chart can disagree so completely.

What this tool can NOT tell you

• The Upapada is a marriage indicator, not a marriage verdict. Classical texts pair a malefic in the 2nd from UL with cautions, and those same texts are equally clear that cancellation, remedial conduct, and the rest of the chart all bear on the outcome. Anyone reading a single UL factor as "this marriage fails" is misusing the technique.
• This calculator does not name a wedding date, a spouse, or a verdict on a specific relationship. Timing belongs to the Dasha and to Good Timings; a specific pairing belongs to two-chart matching, not to one point in one chart.
• UL is derived from the Lagna via the 12th house, so it inherits every error in your birth time. A one-sign error in the ascendant moves the Upapada with it. If your birth time is uncertain, rectify before you weigh this reading.
