Jaimini astrology does something the ordinary birth chart does not: it ranks your planets by degree and gives the top and bottom of that list special jobs. The planet at the HIGHEST degree in any sign is your Atmakaraka — the significator of the soul, the planet carrying the deepest desire and the karmic lesson you came in to work on. The Atmakaraka is the planet the rest of your chart bends toward. Finding both karakas from one set of degrees

1. List each planet’s degree WITHIN its sign (0°–30°), ignoring the sign. Example: Sun 5°10′, Moon 22°05′, Mars 18°40′, Mercury 3°40′, Jupiter 27°15′, Venus 11°30′, Saturn 9°50′.
2. Highest degree wins the Atmakaraka: Jupiter at 27°15′ is the highest — Atmakaraka = Jupiter (a soul-theme of wisdom, dharma, and teaching).
3. Lowest degree wins the Darakaraka: Mercury at 3°40′ is the lowest — Darakaraka = Mercury (seeking a partner who is a mind to talk to, learning clarity through union).
4. That is the whole selection — two planets fixed by comparison alone, before a word of interpretation.

Two schemes exist: Parashara’s 7-planet karakas (used here) and K. N. Rao’s 8-planet scheme that adds Rahu (counted 30°-minus-its-degree). They can hand the Darakaraka to different planets, so we state which scheme the calculator runs — reproducibility over mystique.

What this tool can NOT tell you

• The karakas are a Jaimini overlay, not the whole chart. A Venus Atmakaraka does not mean love is your only story — it means love is the lesson threaded through the rest of your placements.
• When two planets sit within a degree of each other, a small birth-time error can swap which is the karaka. If your time is approximate, treat a borderline result as provisional and rectify first.
• The 7-planet vs 8-planet (Rahu-included) debate genuinely changes some results. We tell you which convention produced your karakas so you can reconcile with any other reading you have seen.
• Soul-desire language is interpretive by nature. Use it as a mirror for self-understanding, not as a fixed label — the value is in recognition, not in being boxed.
