The Navamsa — the D9 — is the second chart every serious Jyotishi opens after the birth chart, and there is a reason it is called the "fruit" of the horoscope. It is built by splitting each 30° sign into nine equal parts of 3°20′ and re-casting those parts as a fresh, standalone chart. Where the birth chart (Rashi, D1) shows the promise, the Navamsa shows whether that promise ripens — the true, tested strength of every planet and the deeper quality of the life’s two great themes: marriage and dharma. We compute it from Swiss Ephemeris longitudes on the Lahiri ayanamsa, so the divisional placements are exact.

Three things make the D9 indispensable. First, it is THE chart of marriage — the D9 7th house and its lord, and Venus within it, describe the union more deeply than the birth chart’s 7th alone. Second, it is the ultimate dignity check: a planet powerful in the Rashi but fallen in the Navamsa promises more than it delivers, while a modest Rashi planet dignified in the D9 hides real strength. When a planet holds the SAME sign in both charts it is Vargottama — a rare steadiness that makes its results unusually reliable across a whole life. Third, through the Karakamsha (the Navamsa sign of your Atmakaraka) it opens the Jaimini reading of the soul’s direction.

The honest caveat comes with the territory: because each navamsa is only 3°20′ wide, a planet crosses from one navamsa to the next in a handful of birth minutes. That makes the D9 more birth-time-sensitive than almost any other chart. An exact, verified time gives a trustworthy Navamsa; an approximate one gives a provisional sketch — and we would rather you knew that than read a confident marriage analysis off a shaky foundation.

What the Navamsa is read for

The D9 is not a general second horoscope — it answers a specific set of questions with more authority than the birth chart. These are the ones it is actually consulted for.

Marriage and the spouse

The D9 7th house, its lord, and Venus in the Navamsa describe the nature of the marriage and the partner’s deeper character — the classical reason the D9 is inseparable from any serious relationship reading.

A planet’s TRUE strength

Compare each planet’s D1 and D9 dignity. Strong in Rashi but weak in Navamsa = promise that underperforms; weak in Rashi but strong in Navamsa = hidden reserves that surface later. The D9 is the honesty test.

Vargottama planets

A planet in the same sign in both D1 and D9 is Vargottama — its results are unusually consistent and dependable across life. A Vargottama Lagna is especially prized.

Mapping a planet into its navamsa — two calculations you can check

1. The arithmetic: each navamsa is 3°20′ (3.3333°). To find which of the nine parts a planet occupies, divide its degree-into-sign by 3.3333 and take the next whole number up. Then count that many signs from the element’s starting sign (see the table above).
2. Example 1 — a planet at 15°00′ Taurus. 15 ÷ 3.3333 = 4.5, so it sits in the 5th navamsa (the 13°20′–16°40′ slice). Taurus is an EARTH sign, so counting starts at Capricorn: Capricorn(1), Aquarius(2), Pisces(3), Aries(4), Taurus(5). Its navamsa sign is Taurus — the SAME as its Rashi sign, so this planet is Vargottama.
3. Example 2 — a planet at 25°00′ Taurus. 25 ÷ 3.3333 = 7.5, so it sits in the 8th navamsa (23°20′–26°40′). Earth again starts at Capricorn: Capricorn(1), Aquarius(2), Pisces(3), Aries(4), Taurus(5), Gemini(6), Cancer(7), Leo(8). Its navamsa sign is Leo — a fiery D9 expression despite the earthy Taurus Rashi.
4. Notice how two planets in the SAME Rashi sign (Taurus) land in completely different navamsas — one Vargottama, one thrown into Leo — purely because of their degree. That is why the exact degree, and therefore the exact birth time, decides the D9.

Both results are reproducible with a pencil and the elemental starting-sign rule. The calculator does exactly this for all nine planets and the ascendant, then reads the D9 houses that result.

What this tool can NOT tell you

• The D9 is the most birth-time-sensitive common chart there is — each navamsa is only 3°20′ wide, so a few minutes’ error can move a planet a whole sign. If your time is approximate, treat the Navamsa (and any marriage reading built on it) as provisional and rectify first.
• The Navamsa refines the birth chart; it does not replace it. Read the two together — the D1 for the blueprint, the D9 for whether it ripens. A D9 read in isolation loses the framework it is meant to test.
• The D9 describes the QUALITY and nature of marriage and the spouse’s character — not a name and not a wedding date. Timing lives in the Dasha and transits, not in the divisional chart.
• Vargottama is a consistency signal, not a guarantee of good outcomes. A Vargottama benefic delivers dependable good; a Vargottama malefic delivers dependable difficulty. Strength cuts both ways.
