Most astrology tells you WHAT is in your chart. The Vimshottari Dasha tells you WHEN it activates — and that is why, in Vedic astrology, it is the single most important timing system there is. Your life is divided into nine planetary periods (Mahadashas) that always run in the same order and always add up to exactly 120 years. Whichever planet’s period you are in colours that whole stretch of life; its themes come forward, its promises (and its debts) come due. Two people with similar charts live very different decades because they are running different Dashas.

The system is anchored on the Moon. The nakshatra your Moon occupied at birth decides which planet’s Dasha you were born into, and how much of it was already elapsed — so the very first thing the calculator needs, and the reason birth time matters, is an accurate Moon position. From there it lays out your complete 120-year timeline: the sequence of Mahadashas, the Antardashas (sub-periods) inside each, and the dates the periods change. We compute the Moon and the nakshatra balance with Swiss Ephemeris on the Lahiri ayanamsa.

What the Dasha gives you is a map of seasons: which years lean toward growth, which toward consolidation, which ask for patience. What it does not give you is a guarantee that an event will happen on a date — a Dasha opens a door, but the chart’s strength and the current transits decide how wide. Used honestly, it is the difference between "your chart shows a career rise" and "your chart shows a career rise, and the window is roughly these years."

The nine Mahadashas — length and life theme

The periods always run in this order and these fixed lengths (120 years total). Your current Mahadasha lord is the theme running your life right now.

Ketu — 7 years

Detachment, endings, spiritual turns, and the loosening of worldly grip. Often a period of letting go, inward focus, or unexpected redirection. Uncomfortable if you cling; clarifying if you release.

Venus — 20 years

The longest period: relationships, comfort, beauty, wealth, pleasure, and creativity. Marriage, prosperity, and enjoyment often flower here — a generally sweet, expansive era when Venus is well-placed.

Sun — 6 years

Authority, recognition, career visibility, dealings with government and father-figures, and the strengthening of the self. Short and bright — a period to step forward and be seen.

Moon — 10 years

Emotion, home, mother, the public, and the mind. A period governed by feeling and connection; fortunes rise and fall with mood and relationship. Nurturing when the Moon is strong.

Mars — 7 years

Energy, courage, property, competition, and conflict. A period of drive and action — good for building and winning, testing for patience and temper.

Rahu — 18 years

Ambition, the unconventional, foreign lands, sudden rises and reversals, obsession and breakthrough. A powerful, turbulent era that rewards boldness and audits every shortcut.

Jupiter — 16 years

Wisdom, growth, children, teachers, dharma, and good fortune. Classically the most benevolent period — expansion of knowledge, family, and standing when Jupiter is well-placed.

Saturn — 19 years

Discipline, work, endurance, delay, and mastery through time. The heaviest period and often the most transformative — Saturn underpays early and over-delivers to those who persist.

Mercury — 17 years

Intellect, communication, commerce, education, and skill. A period of learning, dealing, writing, and networks — mental and versatile, productive when Mercury is strong.

Ashwini · Magha · Mula → Ketu (7 yrs)

A childhood that begins in Ketu — often unsettled, detached, or marked by an early separation, a move, or a family the chart does not let you take for granted. Children born here are frequently described as old souls or as hard to reach. Ketu is short, so the tone usually resets before school is over.

Bharani · Purva Phalguni · Purva Ashadha → Venus (20 yrs)

The longest possible opening. Venus running from birth to age twenty covers the entire childhood and adolescence in comfort, beauty, and relationship — often materially easier early years and a strong pull toward art, taste, or affection. The catch: the first hard period then arrives in adulthood, with no earlier rehearsal.

Krittika · Uttara Phalguni · Uttara Ashadha → Sun (6 yrs)

The shortest opening. Six years of Sun puts the father, authority, and the child's own visibility in the foreground very early. Often a bright, noticed, somewhat pressured start — and because it is so brief, the childhood then belongs mostly to whichever period follows.

Rohini · Hasta · Shravana → Moon (10 yrs)

A decade of Moon over the formative years — mother, home, and emotional life dominate. Classically a nurturing start, and one that makes the person unusually attuned to atmosphere and mood for the rest of their life. When the natal Moon is afflicted, the same decade registers as early emotional weather they never quite forget.

Mrigashira · Chitra · Dhanishta → Mars (7 yrs)

Seven years of Mars from birth: physical, competitive, sometimes accident-prone early childhood. Siblings, sport, and sheer energy feature. The child is rarely passive, and the household usually knows it.

Ardra · Swati · Shatabhisha → Rahu (18 yrs)

Eighteen years of Rahu covering the whole of childhood and adolescence — the most unconventional opening in the system. Foreign places, unusual households, early exposure to things the chart-holder was arguably too young for, and an appetite that starts early. It ends around the age most people are just beginning, which is why these lives often look like they started twice.

Punarvasu · Vishakha · Purva Bhadrapada → Jupiter (16 yrs)

Sixteen years of Jupiter through childhood — teachers, doctrine, and expansion. Classically the most protected opening: education tends to come easily and a guiding figure usually appears. The risk is a person who reaches adulthood well taught and under-tested.

Pushya · Anuradha · Uttara Bhadrapada → Saturn (19 yrs)

The hardest opening the system offers, and we are not going to dress it up: nineteen years of Saturn means responsibility arrives early, resources feel scarce, and childhood is shorter than it should be. It is also why this group so often reaches thirty with a durability their peers simply do not have. Saturn front-loads the cost.

Ashlesha · Jyeshtha · Revati → Mercury (17 yrs)

Seventeen years of Mercury across the school years — verbal, quick, curious, frequently a strong student and an early talker. Education and communication are the through-line. The shadow is restlessness: a mind trained to move on before anything is finished.

The nine Antardashas — how a sub-period recolours the season

Inside every Mahadasha, the same nine planets run again as Antardashas, in the same fixed order, starting from the Mahadasha lord itself and each taking its own proportional share. This is why two people in the same Mahadasha are not having the same year. Read the pairing: the Mahadasha sets the terms, the Antardasha decides how this stretch of it feels.

Ketu Antardasha

Interest drains out of whatever the Mahadasha is building. Endings, withdrawal, and loose ends. In an easy Mahadasha it reads as a pause; in a hard one it is the low point — and usually the point where something you were holding onto finally goes.

Venus Antardasha

The longest sub-period in any Mahadasha. Relationship, money, comfort, and ease enter — even inside Saturn or Rahu, this is where the season softens. Marriages and major purchases cluster here more than in any other sub-period.

Sun Antardasha

Short and exposing. Authority, recognition, government and paternal matters surface, and whatever the Mahadasha has been building becomes visible to other people — for better or worse. Things get decided rather than deliberated.

Moon Antardasha

Emotional weather, home, mother, and the public. Decisions made here are made on feeling, so the classical advice is to postpone anything irreversible until the mind settles. Popularity and mood both rise and fall faster than usual.

Mars Antardasha

Heat applied to the Mahadasha's agenda: action, property, competition, surgery, disputes. Excellent for finishing and for physical effort. If the Mahadasha lord and Mars are enemies, this is where the friction of the whole period concentrates.

Rahu Antardasha

Acceleration with a blind spot. Sudden opportunity, foreign contact, and the temptation to skip a step. Whatever the Mahadasha is about, Rahu wants more of it faster — and this sub-period is where shortcuts are taken and, later, where they are found.

Jupiter Antardasha

The Mahadasha widens. Teachers, children, learning, standing, and relief. Classically the most protective sub-period, and the one where support tends to arrive from someone older or more established.

Saturn Antardasha

The Mahadasha slows and asks for proof. Delay, workload, and endurance — plans stretch, approvals take longer, and nothing is granted on charm. What survives this sub-period tends to be what actually lasts in the whole Mahadasha.

Mercury Antardasha

Talking, dealing, learning, and paperwork. Contracts, study, negotiation, travel and siblings. Productive and busy; the risk is mistaking activity for progress, because Mercury will happily keep you moving without deciding anything.

How your starting Dasha and its balance are found — the rule, then three real calculations

1. The rule (Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra): the 27 nakshatras are ruled by the nine planets in the repeating order Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury. The lord of the nakshatra your MOON occupies at birth is the Mahadasha you are born into. Each nakshatra spans exactly 13°20′, so nakshatra number n runs from (n−1) × 13°20′ to n × 13°20′ of sidereal longitude.
2. The BALANCE — how much of that first period is left at birth — is the fraction of the nakshatra the Moon has NOT yet crossed, applied to that lord's full length. Balance = (1 − portion elapsed) × full years.
3. Example 1 — Moon at 43°20′ (3°20′ into Rohini). Rohini is nakshatra 4, running 40°00′ to 53°20′; its lord is the Moon (10 years). Elapsed = 3°20′ ÷ 13°20′ = 3.333 ÷ 13.333 = 25%. Balance = 75% × 10 = 7.5 years. So: Moon Mahadasha from birth to age 7½, then Mars (7) to 14½, then Rahu (18) to 32½.
4. Example 2 — Moon at 116°40′ (10°00′ into Ashlesha). Ashlesha is nakshatra 9, running 106°40′ to 120°00′; its lord is Mercury (17 years). Elapsed = 10 ÷ 13.333 = 75%. Balance = 25% × 17 = 4.25 years, i.e. 4 years 3 months. So: Mercury to age 4¼, then Ketu (7) to 11¼, then Venus (20) to 31¼.
5. Example 3 — Moon at exactly 240°00′, the first minute of Mula. Mula is nakshatra 19, running 240°00′ to 253°20′; its lord is Ketu (7 years). Elapsed = 0%, so the full 7 years remain — this person is born at the exact opening of a Ketu Mahadasha. Ketu runs 0 to 7, Venus 7 to 27, Sun 27 to 33.
6. From there the sequence never varies and never stops: each lord follows the next in the fixed order, and the periods total 120 years. Only your entry point moves.

Every line above is checkable by hand with a calculator — no black box. The tool does exactly this arithmetic from your Moon's computed longitude, then dates every boundary from your birth date. Notice what the three examples share: change the Moon's position by a couple of degrees and every date on the timeline moves by years. That is why birth time matters here more than on almost any other page.

What this tool can NOT tell you

• The Dasha needs an accurate birth time. The starting period and its balance are set by the Moon’s exact nakshatra position; a wrong time shifts every date on the timeline.
• A Dasha times a THEME, not a guaranteed event. A favourable period opens a door; whether you walk through — and how far — depends on the chart’s strength and the transits of the moment. Timing is a window, not a promise.
• The Mahadasha is the season; the Antardasha (sub-period) is the month within it. Big-picture timing comes from the Mahadasha, but the specific triggers come from the sub-periods and transits layered on top.
• A "hard" Dasha (Saturn, Rahu, Ketu) is not a sentence. These periods are demanding, but they are also where the most durable growth happens — the reading is about how to work WITH the season, not dread it.

What is the Vimshottari Dasha system?

Vimshottari (meaning 120) is the most widely used Vedic timing system. It assigns each planet a fixed rulership period: Ketu 7 years, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19, Mercury 17. Your starting point depends on the Moon's Nakshatra at birth.

How do Mahadasha and Antardasha interact?

The Mahadasha sets the broad life chapter (6-20 years), while the Antardasha adds a secondary planet's influence within that chapter. Whether the two planets are friends, enemies, or neutral — and their house lordships — determines if the sub-period amplifies or moderates the main period.

Should Dasha be read alone for predictions?

No. Dasha works best combined with current transits (Gochar) and natal chart strength. A career peak is most likely when the relevant Dasha runs simultaneously with favorable transits. Neither system alone gives the complete timing picture.

Why does my Dasha timeline start at a specific age?

Your Dasha starting point is calculated from how far through its Nakshatra the Moon had traveled at birth. If the Moon was 60% through a Nakshatra ruled by Venus, you would have 40% of Venus Mahadasha (8 years) remaining at birth, followed by Sun, Moon, Mars, and so on in fixed sequence.
