Manglik Dosha — The factor that is not one of the 36 points — measured from the Lagna, and impossible without a birth time

Manglik is assessed from Mars relative to the Lagna, which advances a full sign about every two hours. That makes it the one matching factor a missing birth time does not merely degrade — it removes it, and a careless calculator will report the absence as "not Manglik".

manglik dosha, kundli matching, guna milan, ashtakoot, kundali milan

The factor that is not one of the 36 points — measured from the Lagna, and impossible without a birth time.

Mars is not one of the eight kootas. Guna Milan reads the Moon sign and the nakshatra, and Mars appears nowhere in it — so a complete 36-point score tells you nothing whatever about Manglik status. This surprises people, because tools routinely present the two together as though the second were part of the first.

Manglik is a separate, older assessment with a different structure. It asks a single question about one planet: where does Mars sit relative to the ascendant? If it falls in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house, the chart is Manglik — sometimes called Mangal dosha or Kuja dosha.

That house count is what makes it fragile. Houses are measured from the Lagna, and the Lagna moves through a whole sign roughly every two hours. A birth time wrong by ninety minutes can move Mars from the 7th house to the 6th and turn a Manglik chart into a clean one, or the reverse. Nothing else in matching is this sensitive to the clock.

The rule, and the two cancellations our engine applies

Six houses flag it; two conditions clear it.

The flagged houses are 1, 2, 4, 7, 8 and 12 counted from the Lagna. Half the chart, which is why Manglik is far from rare.

Our engine then applies two cancellations. The first is placement-based: Mars in its own signs — Mesha or Vrishchika — or exalted in Makara does not create the dosha, because a strong, dignified Mars is held not to afflict. The second is couple-level: when both people are Manglik, the dosha is treated as mutually cancelled, which is the most widely cited exception in the whole of matching practice.

Note that the second one is a property of the pair, not of either chart. Two Manglik charts produce a non-Manglik match, so "is this person Manglik" and "does this match carry Manglik dosha" are genuinely different questions with different answers.

The last row is the one to watch. "Not computable" and "not Manglik" are different findings, and a calculator that conflates them will report a clean result for a chart it never assessed.

The failure mode we want to name explicitly

When a birth time is missing, there is no Lagna, so there is no house position for Mars, so there is no Manglik assessment. That is the correct answer: unknown.

What many tools do instead — including, in one internal code path, ours — is return "not Manglik" when the inputs are absent. That is a defensible engineering default and a poor user-facing one, because the two are indistinguishable in the output. A reader sees a clean Manglik line and has no way to tell whether the chart was checked and passed, or never checked at all.

We are flagging it here rather than quietly relying on it. If you are reading a Manglik result anywhere — ours or anyone else's — the first question is whether a birth time was supplied for both people. If it was not, the Manglik line carries no information regardless of what it says.

Keeping it in proportion

Mars occupies each sign for roughly six to seven weeks, and six of the twelve houses are flagged, so a large share of charts are Manglik before any cancellation is considered. It is not a rare mark.

The severity attached to it in popular practice — including the claim that a Manglik must marry a Manglik or face widowhood — considerably exceeds what the classical sources support, and it has caused real harm to real people, disproportionately women. We will compute the placement and tell you what the texts say about it. We will not tell you it forecasts anyone's death or the failure of a marriage, because it does not.

The practical reading is narrower and more useful: Mars in these houses is a classical note about temperament and friction in partnership, one factor among many, cancelled by dignity of placement and by a partner in the same position. Treat it as a topic to understand rather than a barrier to clear.

Two charts, one match — and the cancellation that decides it

Both people have Mars in a flagged house. The individual readings and the couple-level reading disagree, which is the normal situation rather than an edge case.

Couple-level ruleBoth Manglik → mutually cancelled

Two Manglik individuals, and a match the engine reports as carrying no Manglik dosha.

Both house counts depend on Lagnas, and a Lagna moves a full sign about every two hours. Change either birth time by ninety minutes and Mars may leave the flagged set entirely, changing both the individual readings and — because the mutual cancellation needs both — the couple result too.

Frequently asked

What is Manglik dosha?

A chart is Manglik when Mars occupies the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house counted from the Lagna. It is also called Mangal dosha or Kuja dosha, and it is assessed separately from the 36-point Guna Milan score — Mars is not one of the eight kootas.

Can Manglik dosha be checked without birth time?

No. The houses are counted from the Lagna, which advances a full sign about every two hours, so without a birth time there is no house position for Mars and no assessment. Be careful with tools that return a clean Manglik result anyway — that is the absence of a check, not the result of one.

What happens if both partners are Manglik?

The dosha is treated as mutually cancelled, and our engine implements this. It is the most widely cited exception in matching practice: two Manglik charts produce a match carrying no Manglik dosha, so the individual readings and the couple reading can legitimately differ.

Does Manglik dosha get cancelled any other way?

Our engine also cancels it when Mars is dignified by placement — in its own signs Mesha or Vrishchika, or exalted in Makara. Classical sources describe further exceptions involving aspects, the Moon's position and the age at marriage; we do not apply those automatically, because they need judgement rather than a lookup.

Is Manglik dosha as serious as people say?

No. The severe claims attached to it in popular practice go well beyond what the classical sources say, and they have caused real harm. Mars in these houses is a traditional note about temperament and friction in partnership — one factor, cancelled by dignity and by a partner in the same position, and not a forecast about anyone's life or death.

What this page can NOT tell you

The 12-row Lagna map was generated from the engine's own house arithmetic — Mars sign minus Lagna sign, modulo twelve — so it reflects exactly what the calculator flags, including which placements its dignity rule cancels. Manglik is assessed from the Lagna only; other reference points used in some traditions are named in the honest-limits block rather than silently applied.
