Nadi carries more weight than any other koota and decides it with the least nuance. Each of the 27 nakshatras belongs to exactly one of three nadis — Adi, Madhya or Antya. If both people fall in the same one, the score is zero and the pairing is said to carry Nadi dosha. If they differ, the full 8 points are awarded. There is nothing in between.

The base rate follows directly from the structure. Three groups of nine, evenly divided, means a randomly chosen pair lands in the same group one time in three. We confirmed this against the engine across all 104,976 possible nakshatra and sign combinations: Nadi dosha is present in 34,992 of them, exactly 33.3%.

That number is the most useful thing to know about Nadi dosha, because it reframes what a flag means. This is not a rare affliction singling a couple out. It is the expected outcome for a third of everyone, produced by a coarse rule applied to a 27-way classification — which is precisely why the classical literature accumulated so many exceptions to it.

The three nadis

The three nadis are commonly glossed onto the Ayurvedic doshas — Adi with Vata, Madhya with Pitta, Antya with Kapha — and the traditional reasoning behind the rule is constitutional: a shared nadi was held to indicate a shared physiological type, and therefore less complementarity.

We report that as the classical rationale, not as a medical claim. There is no evidence that nakshatra grouping corresponds to any measurable physiological trait, and the health and fertility conclusions sometimes attached to Nadi dosha are not supported. The rule is a classical convention worth understanding on its own terms; it is not a diagnosis and should never be used as one.

What Nadi dosha does to the total

Losing 8 points caps the achievable total at 28 — which is still inside the "excellent" band.

Because Nadi is worth 8 points, a flagged pairing can reach at most 28 of 36. We searched the entire space for the highest total coexisting with Nadi dosha and it is exactly 28 — reached, for instance, by two people who share both nakshatra and rashi.

This is the trap. 28 is at or above the conventional "excellent" threshold, so a pairing carrying the single heaviest flag in the system can be reported as an excellent match by any tool that ranks on the total alone. Our verdict logic refuses that: a result is only called excellent or good when Nadi is clear, regardless of the number.

It also explains a pattern people notice and misread — that Nadi dosha seems to show up on otherwise strong matches. It does not show up more often on strong matches; it is simply the one flag a strong total cannot rule out.

Cancellation — and what our calculator deliberately does not do

Classical sources describe several circumstances in which Nadi dosha is considered cancelled or substantially reduced: when both people share the same nakshatra but different rashis, when they share a rashi but sit in different nakshatras, when the nakshatra lords are the same planet, and other case-by-case exceptions depending on the authority you follow.

Our engine does not apply any of these automatically. A same-nadi pairing scores 0 and is flagged, full stop. We want to be explicit about that, because some of our own earlier explanatory copy described these cancellations in a way that implied the calculator applies them. It does not.

This is a deliberate choice rather than an omission. The exceptions are not unanimous across sources and several require judgement about which rule takes precedence. A calculator that silently picked one tradition's exception list would be making a consequential interpretive decision on your behalf and hiding it inside a number. We would rather show the flag and tell you that recognised exceptions exist, so that if one applies to your charts you know to raise it with an astrologer who can reason about which authority they are following and why.

How Nadi compares to the other seven kootas

Its weight and its shape both matter — it is the biggest, and it is a switch rather than a dial.

The 33.3% base rate and the 28-point ceiling come from evaluating all 104,976 nakshatra × sign combinations.
