What "free" covers, how the chart calculation works, and what any astrology chat, human or AI, cannot promise you.
AskSoma's free astrology chat lets you put questions to Soma, an AI guide that answers from your own computed Vedic birth chart rather than sun-sign generalities. This guide explains what the free tier includes, how the chart behind each answer is calculated, and what astrology cannot promise.
At the time of writing (1 October 2026), a free AskSoma account includes three free messages to Soma on your first day and one free message each day after that; each message you send counts as one, and Soma's reply is included. Beyond that allowance, messages use reward credits or a Pro plan. Your birth chart itself is free to generate. Under the current billing model, chat is counted per message rather than per minute, so a long pause between questions does not add to the cost.
These are current terms, not permanent ones, and they may change. Check the [pricing page](/pricing) for the latest allowance and plans before you rely on them.
Soma's chat starts by turning your birth date, time and place into a sidereal birth chart. That chart, rather than generic zodiac content, is what Soma is designed to interpret when you ask a question.
Say you ask, 'What does this year look like for my career?' Soma is designed to look up your natal placements and your current Vimshottari dasha, then answer with reference to the planets involved: which house rules career in your chart, which planet's period you are in, and how that period is traditionally read. If you want to see the figures first, generate a chart at [/kundli-calculator](/kundli-calculator) and then ask Soma to explain any placement in plain language.
You can ask Soma about relationships, career timing, current transits, doshas and dasha periods. Free messages are not limited by topic; the limit is the number of messages.
For dosha and dasha questions, you can check dates yourself with the free [Sade Sati calculator](/sade-sati-calculator) and [dasha calculator](/dasha-calculator), then bring any question about them to the chat.
Some marketplace apps that connect you with human astrologers charge by the minute, often from a prepaid wallet. AskSoma's pricing works differently, as set out above.
Which model suits you depends on what you want. A human astrologer brings personal judgement to a live conversation; an AI chat lets you ask short questions on your own schedule and come back to them later.
If you do not know your exact birth time, Soma can still discuss placements that change slowly, such as the signs of most planets. It is designed to point out that the Ascendant, house positions and the Moon's Nakshatra pada may be unreliable without a verified time, but it may not flag every time-sensitive detail, so treat those parts of any answer with caution.
For time zones, the engine aims to convert the local clock time at your birth place and date to universal time using historical time-zone and daylight-saving data, as described on the [methodology page](/methodology). That data is incomplete for some places and periods, and a time recorded under a local or wartime clock convention, or during the hour when clocks change, can be ambiguous; if your birth falls in such a case, check the converted time shown with your chart. If you suspect your recorded time is wrong, the [birth-time rectification tool](/rectification) compares major life events against candidate birth times. Treat its result as an estimate, not a certified correction.
Generate your free birth chart first — Get your computed chart, then bring it into the chat for interpretation.
No astrology chat, from Soma or a human astrologer, can tell you guaranteed outcomes, exact dates for events such as marriage or a job offer, medical diagnoses, legal verdicts or financial certainties. A chart calculation outputs astronomical positions: where the planets were at your birth and where they are now. Vedic astrology then interprets dashas and transits as timing themes. Those interpretations are a traditional framework, not established predictions about your life.
In the Vimshottari system, a dasha period describes which planet's themes are traditionally emphasised for a stretch of time; it is a framework for reflection, not a schedule of events. Soma is intended to reflect that restraint, for example by describing a Saturn transit as a period traditionally associated with responsibility rather than promising a particular event within it.
Do not rely on an astrology chat, Soma included, for medical, legal or financial decisions. Soma is intended to point such questions to a qualified professional, but no automated safeguard is perfect, so take those decisions to someone qualified in that field.
Not inside AskSoma's chat. AskSoma offers the AI chat and free calculators; it does not run a marketplace of human astrologers. If you want a live consultation with a person, you will need a separate service.
Soma's answers start from Swiss Ephemeris planetary positions, converted to the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri ayanamsa, which is widely used in Indian Panchangs. From those positions the engine derives your Vimshottari dasha sequence, house placements and current transits; Soma then explains them in plain language.
Take the sample chart above. The raw calculation gives 'Moon in Libra 24°39', Nakshatra Vishakha, pada 2'. On its own that is just a position. Soma is designed to interpret it by combining the Moon's sign, Nakshatra and house with their traditional meanings: with a Leo Lagna, a Libra Moon falls in the 3rd house, which tradition links with communication and personal effort; Libra is associated with seeking balance in relationships; and Vishakha is traditionally described as purposeful and goal-driven. That is the difference between a calculator and a chat: one gives you positions, the other explains how they are traditionally read. For the full calculation pipeline, see the [methodology page](/methodology).
AskSoma's [privacy policy](/privacy) explains how your birth date, time and place are stored and used. Your birth details are kept in your account so Soma can refer back to your chart in later conversations.
You can close your account from Profile, then Settings, then Close my account. For full erasure of your data, contact AskSoma support from your registered email address. If you would rather explore before creating an account, start with the free calculators such as the [Kundli calculator](/kundli-calculator).
Getting started takes three steps.
If you would rather see your chart figures before chatting, these free tools are a good place to start.
Yes, within a daily message allowance. Running out does not trigger a charge on a free account: you can wait for the next day's free message, or use credits or a Pro plan if you want to keep going. Current terms are on the [pricing page](/pricing).
Software can calculate planetary positions from ephemeris data; the result depends on accurate birth details and the calculation conventions used. Two programs can disagree if one uses a different ayanamsha, house system or dasha year length, so compare like with like before treating a difference as an error. What the positions mean for your life is covered in the limits section above.
Beyond cost and availability, the main difference is judgement in a live conversation, which a human astrologer brings. If you use both, you can generate your chart here and share the figures, but first check that the astrologer uses the same zodiac and ayanamsha (AskSoma uses sidereal Lahiri), because a different setting shifts every degree.
It helps but is not essential. Before chatting, enter your earliest and latest plausible times in the [Kundli calculator](/kundli-calculator). If the Ascendant sign is the same at both, whole-sign house placements do not change across that range, although degrees and the Moon's Nakshatra pada still can.
Vedic. Soma uses the sidereal zodiac and the Vimshottari dasha system. Western sun-sign astrology uses the tropical zodiac, and because the two zodiacs are currently about 24 degrees apart, many people find their Vedic Sun sign is one sign earlier than their Western one.
