Ask a Vedic astrologer for one number about you and they will not ask for your Sun sign — they will ask for your birth nakshatra. It is the lunar mansion the Moon occupied at the moment you were born: one of 27 divisions of the zodiac, each exactly 13°20′ wide, each divided again into four padas of 3°20′. The Moon covers roughly 13° of sky a day, which means your nakshatra changes about once a day and your pada about every six hours. That sensitivity is precisely why it carries so much information.

Three things hang off this single placement, and they are the reason it matters more than any sign. First, your Vimshottari Dasha sequence starts here: the planet ruling your birth nakshatra determines which of the nine planetary periods you were born into and how much of it was already spent. Second, your emotional register — the nakshatra is a Moon placement, so it describes how you process feeling, not how you present. Third, the traditional naming syllable and the compatibility factors that matching systems score. Change the nakshatra and all three change with it.

This page reads the nakshatra for a person who already has a life to make sense of, which is a different job from naming a newborn. So rather than reprinting all 27 star descriptions, we concentrate on the layer that actually drives your chart: the nine nakshatra LORDS, the Vimshottari sequence they belong to, and how to work out which period you were born into. That is the part almost every finder omits, and it is the part you can act on.

The nine nakshatra lords and their Vimshottari periods

Every nakshatra is ruled by one of nine planets, repeating in a fixed order three times across the 27. Your birth nakshatra's lord is the Mahadasha you were born into — and its length is fixed, summing to 120 years across the nine.

Ketu — 7 years (Ashwini, Magha, Mula)

Born into a Ketu period: an early life marked by detachment, sudden turns, or an odd separateness. Ketu-ruled stars carry a spiritual or specialist edge and a certain indifference to conventional reward.

Venus — 20 years (Bharani, Purva Phalguni, Purva Ashadha)

The longest period, and the one most often spanning childhood into early adulthood. Venus stars carry sensuality, artistry, and a strong relationship to comfort, beauty, and desire.

Sun — 6 years (Krittika, Uttara Phalguni, Uttara Ashadha)

The shortest period. Sun stars carry authority, a sharp centre, and a need to be seen doing something that matters. Purification and ambition are the recurring notes.

Moon — 10 years (Rohini, Hasta, Shravana)

Moon stars are receptive, nourishing, and public-facing. Emotional life runs close to the surface, and the early years under a Moon Dasha tend to be dominated by mother and home.

Mars — 7 years (Mrigashira, Chitra, Dhanishta)

Mars stars carry drive, craft, and a search that will not settle. Competitive and capable, with heat that needs a direction or it turns into friction.

Rahu — 18 years (Ardra, Swati, Shatabhisha)

A long, formative period. Rahu stars are unconventional, restless, drawn to the foreign and the unproven — and often oriented toward something the family has no template for.

Jupiter — 16 years (Punarvasu, Vishakha, Purva Bhadrapada)

Jupiter stars carry expansion, teaching, and a moral centre. Renewal after loss is the classical note — the ability to begin again with faith intact.

Saturn — 19 years (Pushya, Anuradha, Uttara Bhadrapada)

The second-longest period. Saturn stars are durable, dutiful, and slow-maturing; devotion and endurance are the marks, and reward is characteristically late.

Mercury — 17 years (Ashlesha, Jyeshtha, Revati)

Mercury stars are shrewd, communicative, and psychologically perceptive. Skilled with people and with words, sometimes to a degree that others find uncomfortable.

The four padas — why a quarter of a nakshatra changes the reading

Each nakshatra splits into four padas of 3°20′. The pada maps to a Navamsa sign, which is why two people in the same nakshatra can read so differently.

What a pada is

One quarter of the 13°20′ nakshatra span. The Moon crosses one in roughly six hours, so the pada is the finest layer your birth TIME determines — the date alone will not fix it.

The four padas of a nakshatra map onto four consecutive Navamsa signs. This is the mechanical link between the nakshatra system and the D9 chart, and it is why the pada carries real interpretive weight rather than being decorative detail.

Pada → naming syllable

Each of the 108 padas (27 × 4) is assigned a traditional starting sound. This is the basis of the Janma Akshara naming convention — and the reason a naming syllable derived without a birth time is a guess among four.

When the pada is uncertain

If your birth time is recorded only to the nearest hour, your pada may be one of two. Read both, note where they agree, and treat the disagreement as genuinely open rather than picking the nicer one.

From Moon degree to nakshatra, pada, and Dasha balance

1. Start with a sidereal Moon at 8°00′ Taurus. Convert to absolute zodiacal longitude: Taurus begins at 30°, so the Moon is at 38°00′.
2. Each nakshatra is 13°20′, which is 13.333°. Divide: 38 ÷ 13.333 = 2.85, so the Moon is in the 3rd nakshatra — Krittika, which spans 26°40′ to 40°00′ (that is 26°40′ Aries through 10°00′ Taurus). Krittika is ruled by the Sun, so this chart begins in a Sun Mahadasha.
3. Now the pada. Krittika starts at 26°40′ absolute; the Moon at 38°00′ is 11°20′ into it. Each pada is 3°20′, so 11°20′ ÷ 3°20′ = 3.4 — the 4th pada.
4. And the Dasha balance, which is the whole point of finding the nakshatra. The Moon has traversed 11°20′ of the 13°20′ span, which is 85% of the nakshatra. A Sun Mahadasha runs 6 years, so 85% of it was already spent before birth: this person was born with roughly 0.9 years — about eleven months — of Sun Dasha remaining, after which Moon Dasha (10 years) began.
5. Every subsequent period follows the fixed Vimshottari order and fixed lengths from there, which is how a birth moment produces a timeline covering 120 years.

This is the arithmetic behind every Dasha timeline you have ever been shown. It rests entirely on one number — the Moon's exact longitude — which is why an accurate birth time matters more here than almost anywhere else in the chart.

What this tool can NOT tell you

• Your nakshatra needs a birth time to be certain. The Moon changes nakshatra roughly once a day, so a birth near a boundary can genuinely fall either side — and the pada changes every six hours or so, meaning an approximate time gives you the star but not the quarter. We show the boundary times so you can see how close your case is rather than being handed false precision.
• A nakshatra is a Moon placement, so it describes emotional temperament and inner rhythm — not your outward personality (that is the Lagna) and not your public standing (that is the Arudha). People routinely read nakshatra descriptions as a full personality profile and then find they only half fit, which is exactly what should happen.
• The traditional deity, animal symbol, and gana attached to each nakshatra are classical attributes with real interpretive use in matching — but they are not character verdicts. A "Rakshasa gana" birth star does not describe a difficult person, and any reading that treats it that way has flattened a technical category into an insult.
