You bring three or four names the family can live with, and the calculator tells you how each one performs against two independent checks — whether it starts with the traditional nakshatra syllable, and what its Chaldean numerology value comes to. It is a filter, not a fountain, and that narrower job is what makes it useful at the stage most families actually get stuck.

The numerology half deserves explaining because it is the half people trust without inspecting. Chaldean numerology assigns each letter a value from 1 to 8 — notably there is no 9, which is treated as sacred and never assigned to a letter. Sum the letters of the name, and you get a COMPOUND number. Reduce that to a single digit and you get the root. Both matter in this system: the compound is said to describe the outward influence of the name and the root its underlying nature, which is why two names that reduce to the same digit are not treated as equivalent.

The Chaldean letter values

No letter carries 9

Chaldean numerology reserves 9 as sacred and assigns it to no letter. A total can still REDUCE to 9; no individual letter contributes it. Any table showing a letter valued 9 is using a different system, most likely Pythagorean.

How this differs from Pythagorean numerology

Most Western name numerology online is Pythagorean, and it will give you a different number for the same name. Knowing which system you are reading prevents a lot of confusion.

Chaldean — values 1 to 8

Assigns letters by sound and vibration rather than by alphabetical order, and never assigns 9. This is the system used across AskSoma's numerology tools and the one most commonly used in Indian name practice.

Pythagorean — values 1 to 9

Assigns values in strict alphabetical sequence: A=1, B=2, C=3 and so on, wrapping after I=9. Simpler, more common in Western sources, and it produces different totals for the same name.

Compound vs root number

Chaldean practice reads BOTH the unreduced total (the compound) and its single-digit reduction (the root). Pythagorean practice typically reads only the reduced digit. This is why a Chaldean reading distinguishes names that Pythagorean treats as identical.

Which spelling do you score?

The one the child will actually be called and will write. A formal name that nobody uses is not the name doing the work, and scoring it produces a number about a document rather than a person.

Scoring a name end to end — the arithmetic in full

1. Take the name ARJUN. Look up each letter in the Chaldean table: A = 1, R = 2, J = 1, U = 6, N = 5.
2. Sum them: 1 + 2 + 1 + 6 + 5 = 15. That is the COMPOUND number. Reduce it: 1 + 5 = 6. The root number is 6 — Venus's value, traditionally read as harmonious and attractive.
3. Now a second candidate, MEERA: M = 4, E = 5, E = 5, R = 2, A = 1. Sum = 17, root = 1 + 7 = 8 — Saturn's value, read in this tradition as disciplined and slow-building rather than unfavourable, though popular practice often avoids it.
4. Now the syllable check, which is the independent half. If the child's nakshatra pada assigns a sound in the "A" family, ARJUN satisfies the traditional convention and MEERA does not — regardless of how either scores numerically. The two checks are separate and can point in opposite directions.
5. The output is therefore two facts per name: does it match the traditional syllable, and what is its compound and root. Not a verdict — two facts, which you then weigh.

What this tool can NOT tell you

• A numerology score is a traditional convention, not a measurement. There is no evidence that a name's letter total affects a child's life, and this page will not imply otherwise. What it offers is a consistent, checkable application of a system many families use — which is a genuine service, and a smaller claim than it is usually sold as.
• Chaldean and Pythagorean numerology give different numbers for the same name. Neither is more correct; they are different systems. If a relative's calculation disagrees with this one, check which table they used before assuming an error.
• The syllable check and the numerology check are unrelated traditions and frequently disagree. No calculation resolves that — it is a family decision about which convention you actually follow, and this tool deliberately declines to make it for you.
• A name that scores poorly is not a bad name. The most consequential things about a name — whether it suits the child, works in the languages they will live in, and carries meaning you want them to have — are invisible to every calculation on this page.
