What is a Saturn return?

Saturn takes about 29.5 years to travel once around the zodiac. Your Saturn return is the stretch of time when it comes back to the exact degree it occupied the moment you were born. The first one arrives in your late twenties, the second in your late fifties, and a third around 88.

Astrologers read Saturn as the planet of structure, time and responsibility, so the return is treated as a checkpoint rather than a catastrophe: a natural moment to review what you have built, keep what holds up, and rebuild what does not. Plenty of people mark it with a move, a career change, a commitment or a clear ending. Plenty of others barely notice it.

Because Saturn turns retrograde for about four and a half months every year, it can cross your natal degree once or three times. That is why a Saturn return is usually described as a season of a year or more, not a single day.

The Saturn-in-Aries cohort: born 1996–1999, returning 2025–2028

Saturn spent most of April 1996 to early 1999 in Aries: it entered Aries on April 7, 1996, left for Taurus on June 9, 1998, entered Aries on October 25, 1998, left for Taurus on February 28, 1999. If you were born in those Aries months, your first Saturn return falls between 2025 and 2028, because Saturn has come back around: it entered Aries on May 24, 2025, left for Pisces on September 1, 2025, entered Aries on February 13, 2026, left for Taurus on April 12, 2028.

That makes the late-90s cohort the generation in the middle of its Saturn return right now. In the table below, computed for the 15th of every third month, the first exact pass lands between age 28.5 and 29.8, and 4 of the 11 birthdays get three passes because Saturn turns retrograde across their natal degree.

Saturn in Aries pairs the planet of structure with the sign of starting things, a mix traditional astrology calls a difficult fit. In plain terms, this return tends to ask a fast, independent generation to slow one big ambition down enough to build it properly: pick the project, the city or the relationship you will actually commit to, and let go of the ones you were keeping open just in case.

Saturn return by sign

Each range runs from Saturn’s first entry into the sign to its final exit, so it includes any months Saturn dipped back into the neighboring sign while retrograde. If you were born near either end of a range, use the calculator for your exact sign and dates.

Saturn in Aries

Born Apr 1996 – Feb 1999 → first return season May 2025 – Apr 2028

Saturn in Aries returns ask for staying power. You were born with a planet of patience in the sign of impatience, so the theme is turning raw initiative into something that lasts: one business instead of five side projects, leadership that does not depend on adrenaline, independence with a budget behind it.

Saturn in Taurus

Born Jun 1998 – Apr 2001 → first return season Apr 2028 – May 2030

Saturn in Taurus returns are about what security really means to you. Money, possessions and the body come up for review: the job you keep only because it feels safe, the savings plan you never started, the habits that quietly cost you energy. The work is slow and practical, and it pays off slowly too.

Saturn in Gemini

Born Aug 2000 – Jun 2003 → first return season May 2030 – Jul 2032

Saturn in Gemini returns ask a quick, curious mind to commit. The theme is depth over range: finishing the degree, choosing one craft to get really good at, putting your name on what you say. Many people with this placement find their voice gets more weight once they stop hedging.

Saturn in Cancer

Born Jun 2003 – Jul 2005 → first return season Jul 2032 – May 2035

Saturn in Cancer returns center on home and family roles. You may be building a home base of your own, renegotiating how much you carry for relatives, or learning to look after yourself as carefully as you look after other people. Boundaries with family are the practical skill here.

Saturn in Leo

Born Sep 1975 – Jul 1978 → first return season Jul 2005 – Sep 2007

Born Jul 2005 – Sep 2007 → first return season Aug 2034 – Jul 2037

Saturn in Leo returns put self-expression on the line. The question is whether the work and the life you are making are actually yours, and whether you will stand behind them without needing applause first. Creative projects, children and visibility are common arenas.

Saturn in Virgo

Born Nov 1977 – Sep 1980 → first return season Sep 2007 – Jul 2010

Born Sep 2007 – Jul 2010 → first return season Oct 2036 – Sep 2039

Saturn in Virgo returns audit the daily machinery: work routines, health habits, the way you spend ordinary hours. Perfectionism is the trap and "good enough, done consistently" is the lesson. It is a strong time to redesign a schedule that has been running you.

Saturn in Libra

Born Sep 1980 – Aug 1983 → first return season Oct 2009 – Oct 2012

Born Oct 2009 – Oct 2012 → first return season Sep 2039 – Jul 2042

Saturn in Libra returns focus on partnership and fairness. Traditionally Saturn works well in Libra, and the return often formalizes things: a commitment made official, a business partnership put on paper, or an imbalanced arrangement finally renegotiated or ended.

Saturn in Scorpio

Born Nov 1982 – Nov 1985 → first return season Oct 2012 – Sep 2015

Born Oct 2012 – Sep 2015 → first return season Nov 2041 – Oct 2044

Saturn in Scorpio returns deal with shared resources and trust. Debt, joint finances, intimacy and control are the topics; the work is facing the conversation you have been avoiding and building trust you can actually rely on, including trust in yourself.

Saturn in Sagittarius

Born Nov 1985 – Nov 1988 → first return season Dec 2014 – Dec 2017

Saturn in Sagittarius returns test your worldview. Beliefs you inherited get checked against the life you have lived. Education, publishing, moving abroad or committing to a philosophy you will practice, not just admire, are typical arenas for this placement.

Saturn in Capricorn

Born Feb 1988 – Feb 1991 → first return season Dec 2017 – Dec 2020

Saturn in Capricorn is at home in its own sign, so these returns are about career architecture. You review whether the ladder you are climbing leads somewhere you want to be, and you start acting as your own authority rather than waiting for permission from one.

Saturn in Aquarius

Born Feb 1991 – Jan 1994 → first return season Mar 2020 – Mar 2023

Saturn in Aquarius returns look at community and the future. Which groups, causes and networks deserve your time? The theme is being an individual inside systems: keeping your independence while committing to the people and projects that share your values.

Saturn in Pisces

Born May 1993 – Apr 1996 → first return season Mar 2023 – Feb 2026

Saturn in Pisces returns give form to what was vague. Dreams, spiritual practice and creative instincts ask for structure, and compassion asks for boundaries. Rest becomes a discipline here rather than a reward, and drifting plans tend to either take shape or fall away.

How your Saturn return is calculated

Your natal Saturn is computed with Swiss Ephemeris, the same engine AskSoma uses for full birth charts, as a geocentric tropical longitude (the Western zodiac, measured from the spring equinox).

The calculator then scans Saturn day by day across the three years either side of each expected return and narrows every crossing of your natal degree down to the minute. Each crossing is an exact pass. The window is the span Saturn spends within 3° of that degree; the return season is Saturn’s full stay in your natal sign.

Birth time barely matters: Saturn moves about 2 arc-minutes a day, so with no time entered the calculator uses noon, and the dates shift by a day or two at most (up to about a week when Saturn is turning direct or retrograde on your degree). Dates are shown in US Eastern time.

Frequently asked questions

At what age is your Saturn return?
Your first Saturn return happens between about 27 and 30, most often at 29, because Saturn takes roughly 29.5 years to come back to its birth position. For the Saturn-in-Aries births on this page (1996–99) the first exact pass falls between age 28.5 and 29.8. The second Saturn return comes at about 56 to 60.
How long does a Saturn return last?
The exact passes cover anywhere from a single day to about nine months, depending on whether Saturn crosses your degree once or three times. Saturn stays within 3° of your natal degree for roughly 10 to 11 months, and in your natal sign for about two and a half years. For someone born July 15, 1997, Saturn is within 3° from April 3, 2027 to February 10, 2028, and in Aries from May 24, 2025 to April 12, 2028.
What happens during a Saturn return?
Astrologically, a Saturn return is a review of the structures in your life: work, relationships, where you live and what you are responsible for. Common experiences include committing to something long-term, leaving something that no longer fits, or taking on more responsibility. None of it is fixed; it is a timing frame for decisions you would face anyway, and many people find it clarifying rather than hard.
When is the second Saturn return?
The second Saturn return arrives around ages 56 to 60, one more 29.5-year lap later. For someone born July 15, 1997, it has 3 exact passes: June 8, 2056, September 30, 2056, February 27, 2057. The second return is often read as a review of the life built since the first, a natural point to decide what the next chapter is for.
Does birth time matter for a Saturn return?
Rarely. Saturn moves only about 2 arc-minutes a day, so not knowing your birth time moves your Saturn return dates by a day or two at most, or up to about a week when Saturn is stationing on your degree. Birth time does matter for the house your Saturn return falls in, which needs your full chart.
What is a Saturn return in Vedic astrology?
Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which is anchored to the stars and currently sits about 24° behind the Western one, so your Saturn usually lands one sign earlier. Measured that way, the return still comes about every 29.5 years, just a few days later: April 30, 2027 instead of April 27, 2027 for a July 15, 1997 birth. Vedic practice also gives weight to Saturn's 7.5-year passage through the signs around your natal Moon, called Sade Sati.
