There is a technical reason for that preference, and it is worth knowing before you read any pairing here: Jyotish assigns the emotional mind, memory, and inner rhythm to the Moon, so the Moon sign is where the question "will these two people feel safe with each other" actually lives. The Sun describes ego and authority; the Moon describes how a person feels at three in the morning.

The rashi layer also carries a piece of classical machinery the Sun layer has no equivalent of: BHAKOOT, one of the eight factors in the traditional 36-point matching system and, at seven points, the second-heaviest. Bhakoot is scored purely on the distance between the two Moon signs — count from one rashi to the other and back again. Certain distances score full marks; three specific ones score zero and are collectively known as Bhakoot dosha. It is arithmetic on two sign positions, and you can run it yourself in ten seconds.

We show that arithmetic rather than hiding it behind a percentage, because Bhakoot is also the factor most often used to break off matches, and families deserve to see what is actually being computed. The classical texts that describe the dosha also describe conditions under which it is cancelled — and are notably less absolute about it than modern practice tends to be. Bhakoot — the rashi-distance rule, scored

Count the signs from one person's rashi to the other, then from the second back to the first. The resulting pair of numbers determines the Bhakoot score out of 7. This is the second-heaviest factor in the classical 36-point system.

1 and 1 — same rashi

Full 7 points. Two people with the same Moon sign share an emotional register and generally understand each other's reactions without translation. The corresponding risk is shared blind spots.

3 and 11 — the sibling distance

Full 7 points. Classically favourable: a comfortable, mutually supportive dynamic with a friendly, almost sibling-like ease and a sense of gain from one another.

4 and 10 — the home-and-work axis

Full 7 points. Read as complementary — one grounds, one builds. Traditionally considered a stable and productive rashi relationship.

7 and 7 — opposite rashis

Full 7 points. Opposition here is read as complementarity: each holds what the other lacks. Classically favourable despite the temperamental contrast being obvious to everyone who knows them.

2 and 12 — DVIRDWADASHA, scores 0

One of the three Bhakoot doshas. Classically associated with financial strain and mismatched priorities between the couple. Scores zero, which is why a match can lose seven points on this factor alone.

5 and 9 — NAVA-PANCHAMA, scores 0

When Bhakoot dosha is classically cancelled

The same texts that describe the dosha describe its exceptions. Modern practice frequently reports the dosha and omits these — which is how a workable match gets rejected on incomplete information.

The rashi lords are the same planet

If both Moon signs are ruled by the same graha, classical texts hold the dosha cancelled. Several of the doshic distances fall into this case, which is why the raw score alone is not the whole answer.

The rashi lords are mutual friends

Where the two rashi lords share natural friendship in the classical planetary-relationship table, the dosha is widely held to be nullified or substantially reduced.

Strong Graha Maitri alongside it

Graha Maitri, the 5-point mind-compatibility factor, is itself computed from the rashi lords. A full Graha Maitri score sitting beside a Bhakoot dosha is a recognised mitigating pattern.

Nadi and the overall total

Bhakoot is one of eight factors. A match scoring well across Nadi, Gana, Yoni and Graha Maitri with a Bhakoot zero reads very differently from one that is weak across the board — which is why the breakdown matters more than the total.

What cancellation does NOT mean

It does not mean the factor was meaningless, and it does not convert a match into a recommendation. It means the classical objection has a classical answer, and the decision returns to the people involved.

Computing Bhakoot by hand — including a cancellation

1. Take two people: one with Moon in Vrishabha (Taurus), the other with Moon in Tula (Libra). Count from Taurus to Libra: Taurus 1, Gemini 2, Cancer 3, Leo 4, Virgo 5, Libra 6. That is 6.
2. Now count back the other way, from Libra to Taurus: Libra 1, Scorpio 2, Sagittarius 3, Capricorn 4, Aquarius 5, Pisces 6, Aries 7, Taurus 8. That is 8. The pair is 6 and 8 — Shadashtaka, the most-cited Bhakoot dosha. Bhakoot score: 0 out of 7.
3. Before concluding anything, check the cancellation. Taurus is ruled by Venus; Libra is also ruled by Venus. Both rashi lords are the same planet, which is the first and clearest classical cancellation condition for Bhakoot dosha.
4. So the accurate report on this pairing is: Bhakoot scores zero on the raw count, and the dosha meets a standard classical cancellation because both signs share a lord. A report that gave only the zero would have handed a family a rejection the tradition itself does not require.
5. Try it with your own two rashis. Two counts, and then one lookup of the ruling planets — that is the whole computation, and it is worth doing yourself before accepting anyone's verdict on it.

Bhakoot is seven points decided by counting. Because it is heavy enough to sink a match on its own, it is the one factor every family should be able to check and question rather than simply receive.

What this tool can NOT tell you

• A rashi pairing is a sign-level reading, not chart matching. Full Ashtakoota Guna Milan needs both people's Moon NAKSHATRAS, which needs both birth times. What you get here is one factor of eight, read at sign resolution.
• Bhakoot dosha is the factor most often used to break off a match, and it is also one of the most frequently reported without its cancellation conditions. Before a family acts on a zero, check whether the rashi lords are the same planet or natural friends — the classical answer is often already there.
• A compatibility score is not a decision. Two people scoring poorly can build a good marriage and two scoring well can be miserable, because how partners treat each other is not in the chart. Any tool encouraging you to end a relationship over a number is a tool worth closing.
• Sign-level matching cannot see Manglik status, the Navamsa, the 7th house, or the Dasha periods either person is running. If the question is marriage, this is a preliminary look and full Kundli matching with both birth times is the real reading.
• Classical texts differ on the weighting and cancellation rules for Bhakoot, and competent astrologers genuinely disagree about how much to make of it. Where your family astrologer reads this differently from us, that is a difference of school, not an error to be argued.
