The nine grahas side by side

Two of the nine own no sign, exalt nowhere and never run a mahadasha of their own on the strength of a rulership — Rahu and Ketu are crossing points of the Moon’s orbit rather than bodies, and the table shows the gap as dashes rather than filling it in. The other seven divide the twelve signs between them: five hold two signs each, and the Sun and Moon hold one apiece.

The pace column is the one that decides how a transit is read. Saturn takes about two and a half years to cross a sign and the Moon takes two and a quarter days — a ratio of roughly four hundred to one, which is why Saturn restructures a life area and the Moon colours an afternoon. The dasha column is unrelated to that pace: Venus moves quickly and carries the longest period of the nine.

Each of the nine also owns exactly three of the twenty-seven nakshatras, spaced nine apart, and that lordship — not the sign — is what decides which mahadasha a birth chart opens with.

What this page can and cannot tell you

What this page cannot do: it has no birth time, so it cannot place a single graha in a single house of a real chart, and nothing here is a reading. Everything above is structural — it is true of the sign or the graha itself, for everybody, and it stays true next year. A chart turns that structure into an answer only once a date, a time and a place fix the ascendant and the dasha clock; where the birth time is unknown or approximate, the ascendant is unreliable and we say so rather than guessing.

The table above is the same for every reader alive, which is exactly its limitation. A graha’s sign is a fact about the sky; the house it falls in — and therefore the part of a life it touches — needs an ascendant, and an ascendant needs a birth time to the minute.
