The Lahiri ayanamsa — the offset between the tropical and sidereal zodiacs — is currently about 24°. Because the Sun moves roughly one degree per day, that offset corresponds to about 24 days.
So: take your Western Sun sign and its date range. If your birthday falls more than about 24 days after the start of that range, your Vedic Sun sign is usually the SAME sign. If it falls earlier than that, your Vedic Sun sign is usually the PREVIOUS one.
Worked: someone born on 5 August is a Western Leo, since Leo runs roughly 23 July to 22 August.
