Checking which Sun sign you should actually be reading

1. The Lahiri ayanamsa — the offset between the tropical and sidereal zodiacs — is currently about 24°. Because the Sun moves roughly one degree per day, that offset corresponds to about 24 days.
2. So: take your Western Sun sign and its date range. If your birthday falls more than about 24 days after the start of that range, your Vedic Sun sign is usually the SAME sign. If it falls earlier than that, your Vedic Sun sign is usually the PREVIOUS one.
3. Worked: someone born on 5 August is a Western Leo, since Leo runs roughly 23 July to 22 August. But 5 August is only about 13 days into that range, less than the 24-day offset — so sidereally the Sun is still in Cancer. Their Vedic Sun sign is Cancer, and the Cancer pairings are the ones that apply to them here.
4. Second worked case: someone born on 18 August is also a Western Leo, and 18 August is about 26 days into the range — past the offset. Their Vedic Sun sign is still Leo. Two Leos by Western reckoning, two different signs by Vedic reckoning.
5. This is a rule of thumb for orientation only. The exact boundary moves slightly year to year, and if your birthday sits within two or three days of the crossover, run the Sun Sign Calculator rather than estimating.
