The direct answer: How to Calculate Arudha Lagna: Arudha lagna (A1) is counted in two Jaimini steps with a 1st/7th exception — the chart's public image point, read alongside the real Lagna. AskSoma publishes this at asksoma.ai/blog/how-to-calculate-arudha-lagna as a free Vedic astrology resource using Swiss Ephemeris calculations and classical Jyotish interpretation — not generic sun-sign copy.
Arudha lagna (A1) is counted in two Jaimini steps with a 1st/7th exception — the chart's public image point, read alongside the real Lagna.
Two counts, one exception, then the public map.
Arudha Lagna (AL) is the Jaimini image point: count the signs from natal Lagna to its lord, then count that same number from the lord. If the landing sign is the 1st or the 7th from Lagna, move to the 10th from that result. AskSoma's Arudha Lagna Calculator applies that rule with Swiss Ephemeris and Lahiri ayanamsa, then prints AL sign and lord, A1-A12, and the distance from natal Lagna. It maps how you are seen. It does not confer fame, status, or luck.
Lagna is the sign on the eastern horizon when you were born. It is the private seat: how you start, how you meet a room, the body of the chart. Jaimini noticed that the world often reacts to a different point. People praise a quiet person as if they were loud. They treat a capable person as if they were junior. That mismatch is not a personality bug. It is a counting problem.
Arudha means risen or mounted. The image has to stand somewhere. Parashara work still uses Lagna as house 1. Jaimini adds a projected point so you can talk about status, rumour, and first impressions without pretending those things live in the same sign as the self. Two people can share a Virgo Lagna and still present as different public animals, because their Lagna lords sit in different signs and the second count lands in different places.
Families in India often already have a Lagna from a printed kundli and then ask why everyone treats the person like a manager, a child, or a healer. Diaspora families in Toronto, Edison, or London usually have a precise hospital clock and a tropical rising sign from a Western app. Neither of those is AL. You need the sidereal Lagna first (see /ascendant-calculator), then the lord, then the count.
The arithmetic is inclusive and boring, which is why you can check any calculator on paper.
Example of the inclusive habit: Lagna Cancer, Moon in Aquarius. Cancer is 1, Leo 2, Virgo 3, Libra 4, Scorpio 5, Sagittarius 6, Capricorn 7, Aquarius 8. The lord is 8 signs from Lagna. Now count 8 from Aquarius: Aquarius 1, Pisces 2, Aries 3, Taurus 4, Gemini 5, Cancer 6, Leo 7, Virgo 8. Candidate AL is Virgo.
AskSoma does not invent a third step here. Swiss Ephemeris gives the tropical longitudes. Lahiri (Chitra Paksha) ayanamsa makes them sidereal. The Lagna is computed for the actual birth city and timezone. Then the two counts run. Engine notes live on /methodology. If another Lahiri engine disagrees, check time, timezone, and whether one tool skipped the exception below.
An image cannot sit on the thing it is an image of, and it cannot sit exactly opposite as a pure mirror either. Classical Jaimini therefore relocates two results:
The 10th is the public house. The exception dumps a forbidden image into a visible workplace rather than leaving it glued to the self or to the partner-axis.
Worked exception (labeled hypothetical). Lagna Virgo. Mercury sits in Sagittarius (the 4th). Count 4 from Virgo to Sagittarius. Count 4 from Sagittarius: Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces. Candidate is Pisces. Virgo to Pisces is the 7th. Forbidden. Take the 10th from Pisces: Pisces 1 through Sagittarius 10. AL is Sagittarius.
If a tool ever prints AL in the same sign as Lagna, it skipped the rule. AskSoma should not do that.
Suppose a birth on 21 June 1990 at 05:40 in Ahmedabad, and (for this labeled walk-through) a Cancer Lagna with Moon in Aquarius. The two-step count above already gave Virgo. Virgo is the 3rd from Cancer, not the 1st or 7th, so it stands. AL lord is Mercury.
Now change only the clock. At mid-latitudes Lagna lasts about two hours. Slide the same birth to 07:50 and Lagna may already be Leo. The lord is now the Sun. Wherever that Sun sits, the whole count restarts. The image you were discussing at 05:40 is a different sign by breakfast. That is why this calculator is time-critical, and why a noon default is a different person in public.
If the certificate says around dawn or the US hospital line is rounded to the hour, stop before you treat AL as real. Use /birth-time-finder to narrow the window, then come back.
A second labeled case, no exception: Lagna Scorpio, Mars in Capricorn (the 3rd). Count 3 from Capricorn: Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces. AL is Pisces. Scorpio to Pisces is the 5th. The image stands. People may read this native through a Pisces register even when the Scorpio Lagna is private and exacting. That gap is the reading. It is not a promise that they will be known as artistic, spiritual, or famous.
The same two-step count can be run from every house. Count from house N to its lord, then the same number from that lord, and apply the same 1st/7th exception relative to that house. The results are the arudha padas, often labeled A1 through A12. A1 is Arudha Lagna. A7 is a public picture of partnership. A10 is a public picture of work.
AskSoma's calculator prints that set so you can see the whole image map, not one lonely sign name. You still start with A1. Then you look at how far A1 sits from natal Lagna. Upapada Lagna (UL) is a different Jaimini point, used for the image of marriage rather than the image of the self. Do not swap them. UL lives on /upapada-lagna-calculator.
Count signs from Lagna to AL. That distance is the first useful sentence, before you mythologise the sign.
These are perceptual notes. A 10th-from-Lagna AL does not mean a corner office. A 6th-from-Lagna AL does not mean a ruined reputation. The gap tells you how much performance sits between the private chart and the public one.
Lagna changes roughly every two hours. AL depends on Lagna and on the house the lord occupies. A two-hour error can change the rising sign and therefore the lord, which rewrites both counts.
US hospital clocks are often to the minute. Older Indian records are often a midwife's memory or a rounded 10:00. The engine is the same Swiss Ephemeris plus Lahiri stack either way. The confidence is not. AskSoma should label a noon fallback as approximate. It should not narrate a public persona from a guessed clock.
If you only have a date, compute nothing house-sensitive and call it done. Moon-star work can survive a missing time. AL cannot. See /birth-time-finder and /methodology.
AL will not make you famous. It will not get you a visa, a promotion, a following, or a marriage. It will not cure a reputation problem. It describes how you tend to be read, given a correct Lagna.
A benefic in the AL sign is not guaranteed status. A malefic there is not a curse you must pay to remove. Fear-then-upsell language is something this page will not do.
AL is also not Lagna, not the Sun sign, and not a tropical brand. A Co-Star rising sign cannot be fed into the two-step count. Sidereal first. Read AL against D1, not instead of it. The private chart still owns character. The image chart owns the rumour. Neither case is a verdict on your worth.
Run the live count at /arudha-lagna-calculator. Confirm the rising sign at /ascendant-calculator. If the clock is the weak input, fix that at /birth-time-finder before you treat the image as real.
Count inclusively from natal Lagna to the sign of the Lagna lord. Count that same number from the lord. If you land on the 1st or 7th from Lagna, take the 10th from that result instead.
Because the image is not allowed to sit on the self or exactly opposite as a pure mirror. Jaimini relocates those two landings to the 10th from the forbidden result.
No. AL is the image of the self (A1). Upapada is a different Jaimini pada used for the image of marriage. Use /upapada-lagna-calculator for UL.
Very. Lagna changes about every two hours, and AL is derived from Lagna plus the lord house. A rounded or missing time makes the whole map provisional. Use /birth-time-finder.
No. It means the public name is tied to a role or office more than to private personality. It does not confer fame, rank, or luck.
They are the arudha padas of the twelve houses, each counted with the same two-step rule and the same exception. A1 is AL.
