Amavasya is the lunar day on which the Moon finishes its circuit and sits alongside the Sun — the dark, moonless night that closes each lunar month. It is a tithi, not a calendar date: it begins and ends at exact instants, and lasts a little over or under a day rather than exactly one.

A tithi is one twelfth-of-a-circle of separation between the Moon and the Sun. Amavasya is the thirtieth and last of them: the stretch in which the Moon has pulled to within 12° of the Sun and is about to pass it. The moment the Moon crosses the Sun’s longitude, the tithi ends and a new lunar month begins.
The Moon does not gain on the Sun at a constant rate — its orbit is elliptical, so it speeds up near perigee and slows near apogee. That is why a tithi is not a fixed length. Over the occurrences listed below, this page measures each window and prints the shortest, longest and average it found, so you can see the spread rather than take a number on trust.
The consequence is the part worth understanding: a tithi that runs shorter than the gap between two sunrises can begin after one sunrise and end before the next. No sunrise falls inside it at all. When that happens the tithi is called *kshaya* — lost — and calendars have to fall back on a secondary rule. Those are the dates on which two panchangs most often disagree, and this page marks them rather than hiding them.
The tithi window is a fact about the sky and is the same everywhere on Earth at the same instant. Sunrise is not. If a tithi opens at 19:58 in Delhi, then Delhi’s next sunrise falls inside it and Delhi prints that following day — but a city far enough west may still be in daylight, take its sunrise before the window opens, and print the day before.
This is not two calendars being wrong. It is one rule applied at two places. Every date on this page is resolved for New Delhi, because that is the reference most published Indian panchangs use; for anywhere else, treat a printed date as accurate to within a day and check the start and end instants in the table against your own sunrise.

Amavasya is traditionally a day turned inward rather than outward. It is associated with the ancestors — tarpana and shraddha rites are offered on it — and with quiet, fasting and restraint rather than with beginnings. Because the Moon carries no light, classical texts treat it as a poor window for launching something that needs visibility or momentum, and a reasonable one for closing accounts, clearing, and rest.
That is a statement about traditional practice, not a prediction. Nothing on this page says an Amavasya will go badly for you; a tithi is a shared condition of the sky, identical for everyone alive that day, and it cannot distinguish between two people.
